The Berlei lingerie brand is one of the lingerie manufacturers that dedicate itself to product excellence. The Berlei Limited and Associated Companies was founded by Frederick Burley. Frederick Burley was a highly respected citizen of Australia. He pioneered employee relations and was very active in public causes in his country. In 1923, Burley founded the Australian Made Preference League. This promoted Australian based products. A movie was made about the great works of Burley. The movie is entitled Undercover.
The Berlei Limited Company was started in 1910 and was first called Unique Corsets. This was in Sydney, Australia. Fred Burley realized the profitability of the lingerie business in Australia and seized the opportunity in an instant. One of the first educational trips of Fred Burley was to the United States in 1913. He learned how to use the mass production machines during those times. In 1917, the name Berlei came up and then the company was known as that name from then on. The first factory of Berlei was in Wilmot Street in Sydney. Fred’s vision for the company was very manufacturing and product excellence oriented. He states that the company was “to design and manufacture corsets and brassieres of such perfect fit, quality, and workmanship, as will bring pleasure and profit to all concerned, while at the same time rendering such excellent service to our clients and consumers as will merit their permanent patronage.” As you can see, the approach of Berlei focused on product excellence and customer service. With these two things, Berlei became one of the most popular brands in Australian history. These cornerstones of success catapulted the Berlei Company to expand beyond its borders in the not so distant future. From then on, there was no turning back.
The Berlei lingerie brand was one of the first Australian companies to export their products. They put up offices in New Zealand in 1923 and in the United Kingdom in 1930. The New Zealand office started with only fifty employees and grew to more than six hundred in 1960. The United Kingdom office started with forty employees and grew to more than seven hundred by 1961.
