Bikinis
May 1, 2010
Today, the two-piece women’s bikini is a rage. This hot weather wear comes in several avatars. This modern, designed first in 1946 by a French, has taken different forms over the decades. He named this piece of garment after a site, Bikini Atoll, in the Pacific, where the US conducted a nuclear weapon test. The name was given thoughtfully because Bikini, like a nuclear explosion, caused flutters and excitement when it was released.
The bikini has a couple of variants too – the tankini and the monokini. Bikini has long established itself across the world as a popular beachwear for women. This two-piece garment has produced several variants in style and fashion. There are bikinis that provide different levels of coverage. There are humorous terms and interpretations to this Bikini story. The monokini will have its top piece missing. There is seekini which acquires its name because of the bikini transparency. The tankini is a hybrid concept of a two-piece wear with tank top and a bikini bottom. Then there is a camikini which will have a camisole top and a bikini bottom.
Today bikinis have evolved in styles and looks. There are halter-neck bikinis, strapless bandeau that minimize, ones with push-up bra type cups and many more designs in bikini tops. Bottom piece too has many styles – briefs, shorts-like, thong and other skimpier styles.
The trump card of bikini is the skimpy styles that grab a major share in the bikini market. Bikinis have no longer remained to be just beachwear. Now, they are allowed even in Olympic Games. Today, this little wear with a history of over six decades has come to be seen in many unexpected places.
