Future of London Fashion Show
December 1, 2008
The London fashion week once an extremely prestigious even is now being cut from it’s usual six days to just four days. Top designers claim that it is being eased out of the international calendar.
The top British designers said that this is being intentionally done in order to crush them and this is a strategy being adopted by their rivals. However, they have refused to succumb to any pressure. The flagship of the London fashion industry the London fashion week which is help twice a year is facing a never before heard of threat.
This began when rival New York fashion week announced that they were going to show case their collection a week later than usual. This move would cut short the London fashion week. This would of course force top designers to abandon it and go merchandise their designs somewhere else.
Many from the London fashion industry fear that the reduced number of days together with less sponsorship every year as well as the absence of prominent designers will seriously undermine the main fashion shop window that London fashion show has been up till now. The London fashion week is funded by corporate sponsors and the London’s City Hall. Several of the sponsors over the years have declined to participate. Another thing that has unexpectedly sprouted up is the concern over underweight models, who look anorexic and if this continues than the government will not be willing to fund it.
The London fashion week is a creative hub with new designers emerging every season. It serves as the right platform for designers the new as well as the established ones. These talents that throng to London are housed in specially constructed tents at the National History Museum and at inspiring venues all across London.
Most of the talk at the London fashion week this year has been about what could happen to them if they were to be gobbled up by a larger showcase window being provided to New York. The worried lot will be the smaller designers who will have lots to lose. The bigger designers might deflect to greener pastures. Will the international buyers and the press turn up as they have been doing so for years or not? These are some of the questions that still remain unanswered. Only time will be able to answer those.
